What does magnox do?

Magnox is a type of nuclear power/production reactor that was designed to run on natural uranium with graphite as the moderator and carbon dioxide gas as the heat exchange coolant. It belongs to the wider class of gas-cooled reactors.

What is Magnox made of?

Magnox is an alloy—mainly of magnesium with small amounts of aluminium and other metals—used in cladding unenriched uranium metal fuel with a non-oxidising covering to contain fission products in nuclear reactors. Magnox is short for Magnesium non-oxidising.

Where is Cavendish nuclear?

What is the melting point of Magnox?

Since the most outstanding characteristic of magnesium is its density, 1.7 g/cm3, its alloys are used where light weight is an important consideration (e.g., in aircraft components). Magnesium has the lowest melting point (923 K (1,202 °F)) of all the alkaline earth metals.

What metals are in Magnox?

How many Magnox reactors are there?

The first Magnox station (Calder Hall) started operation in 1956, and over the next 15 years 10 additional stations comprising 22 reactor units started operation. Twenty reactors out of a total number of 26 reactor units are still in operation to day after 30 years of service, see Figure 1.1 and Table 1.1.
