EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is used for most of the hand-carving of our scupltures, this is typically the white foam. Some carvers will use XPS (extruded polystyrene) foam. This is sometimes called “blue foam” or “pink foam” and also by its most popular brand name — Styrofoam.

Can you sculpt styrofoam?

Styrofoam is one of the easiest materials to shape by normal means e.g. slicing with sharp knives or a hot-wire cutter, sawing with serrated blades, rasping with files, and smoothing with sandpaper.

How do I make Styrofoam paintable and smooth?

Mold your clay onto the foam head to cover it entirely. I recommend taking a chunk of clay, rolling it into a snake like figure, and then placing it on the foam head. This will help you to more evenly distribute clay so it’s not lumpy. You’ll need to continue wetting the clay gingerly to help you mold.
