In pharmacology, the fibrates are a class of amphipathic carboxylic acids. They are used for a range of metabolic disorders, mainly hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol), and are therefore hypolipidemic agents.

What is an example of a fibrate?

Examples of fibrates include: Fenofibrate (Antara, Lipofen, Lofibra, Tricor) Fenofibric acids (Fibricor, Trilipix) Gemfibrozil (Lopid)

Which drugs are fibrates?

List of Fibric acid derivatives:

Drug NameAvg. RatingReviews
TriCor (Pro) Generic name: fenofibrate5.915 reviews
Lopid (Pro) Generic name: gemfibrozil6.56 reviews
Lipofen (Pro) Generic name: fenofibrate7.32 reviews
Antara (Pro) Generic name: fenofibrate2.01 review

What is mechanism of action of a fibrate?

Fibrates stimulate cellular fatty acid uptake, conversion to acyl-CoA derivatives, and catabolism by the beta-oxidation pathways, which, combined with a reduction in fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis, results in a decrease in VLDL production.

How is fenofibrate metabolized?

Elimination. After absorption, fenofibrate is mainly excreted in the urine in the form of metabolites, primarily fenofibric acid and fenofibric acid glucuronide. After administration of radiolabelled fenofibrate, approximately 60% of the dose appeared in the urine and 25% was excreted in the feces.

How are fibrates metabolized?

Fibrates are metabolised by the hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. All members of this class are primarily excreted via the kidneys and display some increase in plasma half-life in individuals with severe renal impairment.

Is Zetia a fibrate?

Zetia and the fibrate drug class Medications in the fibrate drug class are used to treat high cholesterol. (A drug class is a group of medications that work in a similar way.) Fenofibrate belongs to the fibrate drug class. Zetia is FDA-approved to treat mixed high cholesterol when used with fenofibrate.

Can fenofibrate raise liver enzymes?

Liver enzyme elevations are not uncommon with fenofibrate. Although rare, cases with chronic active hepatitis of auto-immune origin and severe fibrosis have been reported after treatment with fenofibrate and ciprofibrate [7-9].

Is fenofibrate the same as Tricor?

Fenofibrate is available under the following different brand names: Tricor, Lofibra tablets, Fenoglide, Lipofen, and Triglide.
