Updated on April 03, 2026
The US Air Force (USAF) Defence Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) operates a series of satellites which carry very sensitive light sensors known as the Operational Linescan System (OLS) that can detect light emission from the earth surface at night. The DMSP-OLS has a ground swath of about 3000 km.

What is an OLS sensor?
The Operational Linescan System (OLS) is an oscillating scan radiometer with low-light visible and thermal infrared (TIR) imaging capabilities which first flew on DMSP satellites in 1976. At night the OLS uses a Photo Multiplier Tube (PMT) to intensify the visible band signal.
How many DMSP satellites are there?
The DMSP Block 5D-3-1 was launched on December 12, 1999 from VAFB, CA on a Titan-2 vehicle with 6 Block 5D-2 instruments to test the new satellite bus (F15 on orbit) followed by the F16 satellite on October 18, 2003 with the new 5D-3 payload. Since F16, all 5D-3 satellites have been carrying the same payloads. On Nov.
What is the meaning of damp place?
Damp, humid, moist mean slightly wet. Damp usually implies slight and extraneous wetness, generally undesirable or unpleasant unless the result of intention: a damp cellar; to put a damp cloth on a patient’s forehead. Humid is applied to unpleasant dampness in the air: The air is oppressively humid today.
What does DMs mean in text?
direct messages
DMs means direct messages.
How old is the DMSP?
Since the mid-1960’s, when the Department of Defense (DoD) initiated the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), low, earth-orbiting satellites have provided the military with important environmental information.
What does the Poes satellite do?
The Missions The POES project provides instruments to polar orbiting weather satellites in the MetOp and NOAA Series.
How do you stop damp?
Here are a few quick and simple remedies for preventing and banishing damp.
- Wipe down windows and sills every morning.
- Deal with steam from cooking.
- Get rid of bathroom moisture.
- Ensure ventilation.
- Keep your house warm.
- Install insulation.
- Buy a dehumidifier.
- Don’t hang clothes to dry inside.
How is damp caused?
Damp and mould are caused by excess moisture. Moisture in buildings can be caused by leaking pipes, rising damp in basements or ground floors, or rain seeping in because of damage to the roof or around window frames.
What is a melt in slang?
MELT. Definition: Idiot. Type: Slang Word (Jargon)
What does DMSP OLS stand for?
DMSP OLS – Operational Linescan System. Visible and infrared imagery from DMSP Operational Linescan System (OLS) instruments are used to monitor the global distribution of clouds and cloud top temperatures twice each day.
What does spatial resolution mean in MRI?
Spatial resolution (MRI) In MRI, spatial resolution is defined by the size of the imaging voxels. Since voxels are three-dimensional rectangular solids, the resolution is frequently different in the three different directions.
How long does DMSP imagery take to provide global coverage?
DMSP visible and infrared imagery of clouds covers a 3,000 km swath, thus each satellite provides global coverage of both day night time conditions each day. The field view of the microwave imagers and sounders is only 1,500 km thus approximately 3 days data are required for one instrument to provide global coverage at equatorial latitudes.
What is OLS imagery used for?
Visible and infrared imagery from DMSP Operational Linescan System (OLS) instruments are used to monitor the global distribution of clouds and cloud top temperatures twice each day.
