The battle between DD-WRT and OpenWrt is a close one. Both custom router firmware offer a lot of features that make it hard to choose between them. If you have very particular needs and happen to have a supported router, then OpenWrt is a better choice overall.
Is DD-WRT worth it?
DD-WRT can greatly improve your router and make connecting to the internet a much better experience. However, this software does have some potential dangers and downsides you should think about before you decide to flash your router. First of all, installing DD-WRT may void the warranty on your router.
Which router has best firmware?
DD-WRT vs. Tomato vs. OpenWRT: Which Router Firmware Is the Best?
- DD-WRT is easily the biggest player when it comes to open-source router firmware.
- Tomato is easily the most streamlined and user-friendly of the firmware on this list.
- OpenWRT is the oldest open-source router firmware project.
Is DD-WRT still maintained?
The DD-WRT community is still alive and well. Allowing people who still have DD-WRT firmware installed on their routers to exchange information and enhance their router performances.
What is DD-WRT based on?
DD-WRT (DresDren-Wireless RouTer) is a type of firmware for routers based on the Linux kernel. It was designed especially for 802.11a/b/g/h/n routers having the Broadcom or Atheros chipsets. This firmware is registered under GPL and free software licenses and supports a large variety of wireless routers.
Is OpenWrt debian based?
OpenWRT is a fine replacement firmware for these devices, but it’s not Debian, and for some of us that’s reason enough to put Debian on these machines.
What is the difference between OpenWrt GUI and Gargoyle?
There is no comprehensive list of differences between Gargoyle and the OpenWRT GUI. You should try them both and see which you like better. But generally Gargoyle includes more targeted functionality for home users. You can install the same packages on either.
Is Gargoyle open source?
In contrast, the Gargoyle web interface is completely open source: it’s released under the terms of the GPLv2, with a clarification that permits adapting the web interface to configure proprietary back-end software, provided that all modifications to the web interface portion remain covered by the GPL.
What do you like most about Gargoyle?
IMHO gargoyles usp is it’s QOS with the active monitoring which ensures the Qos works even if your line speed fluctuates. Not tried openwrt or tomato but I like the Gargoyle web interface. Reporting functionality is nice and restrictions/quota setup is also good.
Why did Eric Eric start Gargoyle?
Eric started Gargoyle because there really wasn’t an open source router firmware replacement that was easy to use. Gargoyle is a web front-end to OpenWrt, which makes it comparable to other projects like X-Wrt and LuCI (OpenWrt’s new web interface). The latter two projects, though, want to provide maximum functionality in their web interface.
