How can I travel and camp for free?

BLM and U.S. Forest Service lands aren’t the only places to find free camping in the U.S. Some national parks do offer free campgrounds….A few weeks in, I’d learned some tips for finding spectacular campsites for free:

  1. Take the scenic route.
  2. Google, Google, Google.
  3. Use an app.
  4. Ask a ranger.
  5. Be prepared for anything.

Can you camp for free in a national forest?

Free camping, or dispersed camping, is allowed in all national forests, unless noted otherwise. You can find places to camp on the side of main roads, or follow forest access roads (often gravel or dirt) to more remote sites. The general rule is to camp 100-200 feet away from any road, trail, or water source.
